DPP Implementation Dilemma: Early Identifier or Late-Stage Serialization?

When implementing the Digital Product Passport, will companies prefer to print a unique identifier on the packaging at an early stage and manage all product information purely online — or apply the code only at the final production step, enabling late-stage data like batch or expiry to also be encoded and read offline?

Hi Emely,

good question and I guess the answer is as always: it depends.

It will mostly depend on the industry and the respective delegated act. A big question is whether the DPP has to be built on a serial, batch or model level.

Also relevant is the question where the DPP has to be applied. Is the package good enough or does it have to be on the product itself? Again, it will vary depending on the delegated acts.

I guess its too soon to tell..
